A single mother and her daughter…

A story of hope

A single mother and her seven-year-old daughter were homeless. The caller said she didn’t know if she could register her daughter for school since they were homeless. In addition, they didn’t have any food and the daughter didn’t have any school clothes.

Our 211 call specialist sorted through her issues and dealt with them one by one. First, the call specialist referred the caller to a food pantry where she and her daughter could receive monthly food baskets. Next, she told her how to qualify for the federal Food Stamp program. Third, she told her that she can enroll her daughter as a homeless child in a local school, then once the mother has stable housing her daughter can transfer to a permanent school. Lastly, our 211 call specialist told her that she could apply for rent deposit assistance through Shelter Inc. in order to get into an apartment she found.

The mother called us back later to express her gratitude. She said that she and her daughter now had food, deposit assistance, and were preparing to move into an apartment, then her daughter would begin school nearby. “If it weren’t for 211, I don’t know where I would be right now,” the mother said. “I didn’t have to beg and cry for help, and the 211 specialist didn’t judge me or give me any attitude. Instead, she helped and calmed me down. You guys are saviors!”
